How Can I Tell If My Pearl Necklace Is Real Or Not?

I received a ‘pearl’ necklace for Christmas one year from a doctor I worked for. I never knew it if was real or not, but the necklace is heavy and the ‘pearls’ feel cold when I put the necklace on. Does anyone know how to tell if pearls are real or not? Thanks!

  1. easy! take a pearl and scratch your teeth with it. if it actually has a consistant almost emery board sound – it’s real. if it just slides around- plastic

  2. Want to know if you’ve got the real thing? Rub the strand across the front of your upper teeth. It may sound strange, but according to Learn2.com, real pearls will feel rough or gritty while fake ones will feel smooth. This is due to the micropores found on the genuine article.
Imitation pearls are usually made by dipping a glass or plastic bead into a solution of fish scales. The coating is generally fairly thin and will chip over time. Check the pearls for tiny chips or flakes near the hole drilled through them. If you see chips, chances are your pearls are fake.
Try holding the pearls in your hand for a minute. HowToEverything.com states that real pearls will feel cold initially, then will warm.
Real pearls can be either natural or cultured. Natural pearls are formed when a mollusk secretes a substance called nacre to coat an irritant that makes its way inside the animal’s shell. Cultured pearls are formed with a little human help — an irritant is purposely introduced into the shell of the animal. You usually need an x-ray or an expert to distinguish between natural and cultured pearls

  3. Bite on it if it doesn’t loose any skin then its real
    Fake ones tend to peel
I have a few pearl necklaces none are real and I love them
If your are real get them valued and insured

  4. Have you put them on your teeth yet 2Beagles?
Makes me cringe thinking about it.
    Good luck!

  5. okay,
scratch the pearls on your teeth. if they have a grainy/scratchy texture, they are real. if they feel smooth then the are fake.
im not sure if that’s true, my friend told me, but it’s worth a try! =]

  6. hey i have a real pearl .. all pearls have what is called a belly button.. so look on the pearls and see if there is an inditations like it looks like a belly button! i hope that helps!

  7. Just building on what Amber N said, if your pearls are real, they are probably cultured. Natural pearls are usually irregularly shaped and not very attractive, so the naturally round pearls are worth alot of money. The vast majority of perfectly shaped pearls are cultured.

  8. Rub a pearl against your teeth – if it feels abrasive then it’s probably real as the plates of silicas will grate on your tooth enamal. Some clever fakes from asia are coated in silica so also look for any chipping around the drill hole. The string should be silk and knotted in between pearls to stop them rubbing together.
Alternatively, take them to a jeweler and ask :)
Pearls grow more lustrous from being worn so if they’re real wear them as much as possible.
