Opals, Gold, Pearls and Water (The Making of the “My Wild Child” Necklace)

This video documents Jennifer Kalled creating a necklace from opals, pearls and other gemstones. Besides the studio shots, I shot footage of various underwater scenes, and trees in all their fall glory. The underwater scenes were originally just an idea born of the fact that opals are actually largely composed of water. Eventually, the underwater scenes became essential. No CGI or special effects were used beyond merging video from different clips. The trick is merely knowing what clips to overlap with which. The “tumble down” tree imagery scene near the beginning gets most of its power from steady camera movement and a nearly friction-less mode of moving the camera person through the field. Translation: We used a canoe and bent backwards as we glided under the trees overhanging the water. Then, I merged that shot with a silhouette of a tree shot on a foggy day. The music was used with the permission of Dana Cunningham, who is a friend of Jennifer’s. It’s cyclic melody overlapped with the sustained notes of the horn worked well, and dictated a lot of the editing decisions I made. The title of the piece is “Flying over Water”, and was recorded live. I am the videographer and editor of stanzas-of-light.com. I personally create videos for artisans. The videos often have other themes, but focus on the creation of a work of art.
